About the Leading Author
I am an AMU Professor at the Institute of Human Biology and Evolution, Faculty of Biology, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland, where I lead research in computational RNA biology. My scientific work focuses primarily on the bioinformatic analysis of non-coding RNA, particularly long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), including their identification, function, evolution and computational characterization.
I develop methods and bioinformatic tools for studying non-coding transcripts and create dedicated online databases, including miRNEST, CANTATAdb, KTCNlncDB, SyntDB and ERISdb. These resources support the analysis, annotation and comparative study of RNA and genomic data.
My research also extends to transcriptomics and cancer epitranscriptomics, including the identification and functional characterization of m6A RNA modifications using Oxford Nanopore sequencing technologies. I obtained my PhD in Biological Sciences in Biotechnology in 2013 and my habilitation in Biological Sciences in 2019, both at Adam Mickiewicz University.
Between 2015 and 2017, I carried out postdoctoral research in Prof. Uwe Ohler's group at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin, studying functional and evolutionary aspects of human lncRNAs. I have also undertaken research stays at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) in Bethesda, USA, in Eugene Koonin's group, and at the University of Tokyo in Prof. Yutaka Suzuki's laboratory, working on transcriptomic analyses of microRNAs and lncRNAs.
I have received several scientific awards and fellowships, including the Polityka Science Award finalist distinction, the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education fellowship for outstanding young scientists, and two START fellowships from the Foundation for Polish Science. I have led projects funded by the National Science Centre (NCN) and participated in research projects supported by NCN and the National Centre for Research and Development.
I am also involved in doctoral supervision, with current research projects addressing adenosine-to-inosine RNA editing and m6A methylation in breast cancer transcripts. I am a co-author of 40 publications indexed in the Journal Citation Reports and, according to Web of Science, my work has received approximately 2,900 citations, with an h-index of 18.
Other Activities and Hobbies
Outside my academic work, I enjoy developing educational, analytical and data-driven websites and combining programming with practical data analysis. I am a co-founder of data2biology, a company providing bioinformatics services and training. I also develop the Finanse odczarowane project and its related services: Ile zostaje – net salary and taxation calculations; Kredyt czy wynajem – buying versus renting analysis; Giełda po ludzku – accessible analysis of Polish stocks; Giełda USA po ludzku – analysis of US companies; Dywidendy z USA – US dividend calculations; Kapitał początkowy – Polish pension calculations; Kod odczarowany – programming and MQL5 resources; and Zarobki po studiach – graduate earnings and employment analysis. I also run Już Umiem, a collection of educational materials for children, and Czytam Lektury, a website for reading and exploring school literature online. These projects are personal side activities and hobbies that bring together my interests in programming, data, education and the clear presentation of complex information.
